Success so Far

The FOM Scholarship Scheme started in 1999 with four students.

Since then, we have financially supported 116 rural young people to attend university to study a range of health disciplines: Medicine, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, B Sc Nutrition, Medical Technology, Social Work, Optometry, Dental Therapy, Dentistry, Environmental Health, Speech Therapy, Social Work, Nursing, Radiology, and Psychology.

We have visited students at university each year to be able to identify (and help solve) any problems that are hindering their ability to master the material.

We have maintained regular training of students in lifeskills (particularly HIV/AIDS), and supported them as they have tried to make prudent study and life decisions.

Our students have maintained an annual 85% pass rate.

43 students have graduated and are working in hospitals (including internships and community service) and other health services.

27 graduates have returned to work in the five hospitals in Umkhanyakude, whilst some are engaged in internship training whilst others are doing post graduate studies. (If this does not sound like a lot, then read about the dearth of rural hospital health professionals under The Rural Challenge.)

At certain hospitals, graduates who received support from the Scholarship Scheme are active in the day-to-day running of it on a hospital level, and have formed Hospital Working Groups to partner with us to do the work.

Alumni are active in the mentorship and support of students whilst at university, and meet with the students whilst doing their holiday hospital work.

We were frequently cited at the national Rural Health Conference (RuDASA) in Badplaas in August 2007, as being one of the few sustainable solutions to health professional recruitment and retention in rural South Africa.

We won the Platinum Award from the Impumelelo Innovation Awards Trust after they did an independent assessment of the value of our Scheme in addressing the development of health care workers in the public sector.

In December 2007 we held the second hugely successful Life Skills Imbizo in Pongola, where over one hundred students and Alumni gathered to learn and network, and many of the sessions were facilitated by the Alumni themselves.
